We are all surrounded by an airborne virus! You know, like anthrax powder in the mail… insidious and imperceptible. You may never even know that something is off until ..BAM!..it’s too late. We have probably infected those closest to us and don’t even know it either. What is this that’s so prevalent yet so subliminal? What has got its hooks in us and yet we don’t know? Well this is one of those things that are better described than defined
You hear it every day in the news, read it on the internet and on social media, see it with colleagues and classmates everyday. It interrupts your favorite sit-com every other 10-15 minutes sometimes its even in the show! When it pulses through you; you get a tingle of fear, a whiff of gloom. It fuels our sarcasm and feeds our melancholic episodes. Do you have an idea now? Have you guessed what I’m getting at? No? okay. It has caused a break down in the moral fibre of society, turned neighbors into rivals, made friends jealous and siblings envious. Its the excuse behind every employers’ penny-pinching cut. The reason being employees’ loss of enthusiasm. It hasn’t been around that long but you’d never know; from the havoc it has recked, it seems like it’s been around for eons. This virus plugs it’s tentacles into your mind causing a haze, a forgetfulness of times past and a dread over what the future may hold. You’d think that something this toxic would have people struggling for an antidote right? Unfortunately it sells (almost as much as sex does…almost) so I’m sorry to let you know it’s not going any where.
If you think, you’re immune to all this beware because anonymity is its strength
Now if you’ve guessed Advertisement you are very very VERY CLOSE , all viruses require a host to actively replicate and remain virulent and while advertisements are certainly its most common host, don’t mix up the shadow for the real thing. Most people will be hard pressed to find anything good about this virus if presented in black and white but thats the genius of it. IT IS NEVER PRESENTED IN BLACK & WHITE. Something this copious DOES have potential. if it could be harnessed or refined, a springboard of sorts, for the creation of useful? Think of the possibilities.
Take Reyna Peters (not her real name), born to immigrant middle class parents, the first of 3 children taught from an early age that she was special, that she would make a difference in the world. She was born with scoliosis but that didn’t dampen her attitude. The odds where stacked against her, not from a wealthy family, – an immigrant woman, with a physical deformity. She was “let-go” at her first job for doing the ethically correct thing! Her boy friend called off their relationship right before her corrective surgery for her spine. The family insurance maxed out after the surgery leaving them with a huge bill to pay Yet she remained the brightest up beat person at our work place when she returned. With all the dark circumstances and negatives in her life I wanted to find out how she was able to stay so positive, with an infectious enthusiasm that burned bright. I learned a secret from her, if you can turn the negatives in your life into positives, you’ll find the inexhaustible fuel for enthusiasm! You’ll burn bright amidst doleful prospects. You’ll gain an invincible attitude and indomitable spirit! You will become truly immune to this virus. Lets face it you have your tales of tests and trials and I have mine. Maybe not as bad as Reyna but maybe much worse, what if you were able to convert the murky water you’re in right now to an oasis? Just what if?
The name of the deadly plague is DESPONDENCY. Its symptoms are loss of courage, hope and extreme debilitation. It’s current fatality rate (measured in lost dreams and destinies) is 99.9%.
I don’t know if there’s a cure once infected, but I do know that treatment takes a while, to unlearn certain habits. So far it’s been successfully managed with doses of Hope-that- doesn’t-disappoint (See Romans 5:3-5 ).I strive to do this everyday. I will give you some tools that help me.
1. The attack is on your Heart, PROTECT IT. GUARD YOUR HEART ABOVE ALL ELSE, FOR IT DETERMINES THE COURSE OF YOUR LIFE. Proverbs 4:23 (NLT)
Saturate your heart and thoughts with stories of triumph and overcoming obstacles. This will help to steer your heart (and Life) from the poison of despair to a better course. Check out Joel Osteen
2. Your response starts in your Head, BE READY! Prepare your minds for action, keep sober in spirit, fix your hope completely on the grace to be brought to you at the revelation of Christ. Peter1:13(NASB)
Have a mental picture of Christ coming to the rescue, with your bags already packed and ready to go. Focus on HIS brighter future for you and not your gloomy present or ghastly past
3. You have ALL POWERFUL Ally, LET HIM WORK : The Lord Himself will fight for you. Just stay calm. Exodus 14:14(NLT)
You are not in this alone, don’t panic. Let Jesus be your defense and offense.
The next time someone tells you their dream rather than tell them why it won’t work tell them why there’s a need for this service. The next time you hear depressing news in the media say a prayer for all concerned. The next time your colleagues are laughing at another’s misfortune don’t join them. Don’t be afraid to step outside the safety of the popular because in the latter is where despondency thrives.
