I’ve been toying with an idea lately. It’s not pioneering or revolutionary. It’s not original to me. I can’t tell you where or when I first came across it.
Here it is…. What would happen if WE smiled more? I told you it wasn’t novel. It’s not even going to cost you anything (save your pride every now and then).
The most prevalent human predicament is conflict. In our social groups, finances or careers we are dealing with an incalculable number of issues, the full spectrum of which will find us somewhere between the mundane and the celestial. Most of these issues are out of our control but this is an opportunity to put something back into our sphere of influence.
A smile a day keeps the stress at bay?
I work for a major retailer, I’m what you’d call a relief worker. I’m on the road a lot and rarely in the same place 2 days in a row. It doesn’t matter where I show up I see the same doom and gloom in across diverse communities.
I decided to put this idea to task, so I took my plan to work (literally).
It was awkward at first. There were leers and smirks but finally came some responsory smiles.
It was like I was contagious, my colleagues wondered if I’d won the lottery, my clients had actually smiled back wondering what was so funny.
In that instant they were isolated from the weights and issues they were carrying. At that juncture life wasn’t such a chore. The daily grind halted for a few. Mission accomplished! All this from a single smile? Impressive!
What is so powerful about a smile?
Why is it able to disarm the most obnoxious individual?
A smile converts the aura around you into one of pleasantness. It’s like a farmer tilling the soil in preparation for planting seed.
We can control the exchange positively before it ever begins. Think of Enterprise with shields up and so nothing negative can “beam” in.
We always seem to be responding to stimuli around us, to the pressures surrounding us. This is a chance to change that. With a simple smile we force others to pause and smile back.
It’s time to be that stimuli that others respond to.
So what’s in it for you? Hmmm let me see. You get infused with energy. You become a ray of light in someone’s dark day. You become the change we all need. You can also cut down on the Calcium and Vitamin D. This appears to be good for your bones too.
A CHEERFUL HEART IS GOOD MEDICINE BUT A BROKEN SPIRIT SAPS THE STRENGTH (NLT)
A JOYFUL HEART IS GOOD MEDICINE BUT A CRUSHED SPIRIT DRIES UP THE BONES (ESV)
A CHEERFUL DISPOSITION IS GOOD FOR YOUR HEALTH BUT DOOM AND GLOOM LEAVE YOU BONE TIRED (MSG)
So c’mon lets join the SMILING REVOLUTION. VIVE LA REVOLUTION. WILL you SMILE FOR CHANGE 2?…….
